KOIOS – Knowledge Extraction, Machine Learning and other AI approaches for secure, robust, frugal, resilient and explainable solutions in Defence Applications

Project description

Here’s a brief video that describes the project (in Italian).

What is EDF funding?

EDF (European Defence Fund) funding consists of resources allocated by the European Union for research and development, aimed at promoting an industrial base in the Defence sector. For the 2021 call, €1.2 billion were allocated to 61 projects. The Fund encourages cooperation between companies and research institutions.

What are the objectives of the KOIOS project?

The KOIOS project aims to develop new artificial intelligence algorithms for Defence applications, characterized by robustness, frugality, and explainability, with the ability to adapt to the operational environment. To achieve this, KOIOS aims to:

  • Define a Collaborative Innovation Framework for the use and sharing of learning systems and data storage

  • Establish a Community of Practice, with the goal of gathering stakeholders and end users to develop solutions addressing shared problems

  • Focus on real-world use cases provided by project partners, related to the following objectives:

    • Situation Awareness (automatic target recognition)

    • Operational Command and Control (decision support)

    • Mission Equipment (autonomous vehicles, predictive maintenance)

How long does the project last?

The KOIOS project began in December 2022 and will run for 36 months. The kick-off meeting is scheduled for early February 2023.

Who are the project partners?

The project involves a total of 14 partners, including UniBg. These partners include universities:

  • Eindhoven University of Technology

  • University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich

Research centers (Spain, France, Sweden, the Netherlands, Greece):

  • Barcelona Supercomputing Center
